Welcome to Aoyama Dojo, a proud practitioner of the traditional Okinawan Shorin-Ryu Karate under the Kensankai system, founded by Doug Perry. Our dojo is part of a rich heritage, and is focused on spreading Okinawa Karate do to our community.
At the core of our training is 'Kensan' or 'devoted study'. Guided by Perry Sensei's principles, we approach karate with utmost humility and respect. Our training is rooted in traditional Okinawan methods, emphasizing the importance of every punch, block, and kick being delivered with the power of the entire body. This disciplined approach is fundamental to mastering the art of karate.
Central to our curriculum is Kata, the foundation of combat principles, teaching balance, speed, and power. This practice is not just about physical prowess but also about preserving the unique Okinawan karate aspects and developing the mind and body. Our dojo also integrates applied techniques such as Yakusoku Kumite, Jiyu Kumite, and Bunkai, preparing our students for real-world applications and adapting quickly to the unpredictability of combat.
Beyond physical training, Aoyama Dojo places a strong emphasis on character development. We strive to cultivate individuals with integrity, humility, perseverance, and respect for others. Embracing the Shin Gi Tai philosophy, which balances Mind/Heart, Technique, and Body, we believe that the true value of our training lies in forging a resilient spirit and mental strength. This approach prepares our students to face life's challenges with a positive attitude and determination.
At Aoyama Dojo, we invite you to join us in a journey that transcends physical training. Here, you will not only learn the techniques of traditional Okinawan Karate but also embark on a path of personal growth, developing a strong and ethical character, connected to the traditions of Okinawan martial arts.
These are the masters who have molded our liniage and okinawan karate into what it is today
At Aoyama Dojo, we honor a rich heritage rooted in the history of Okinawan Karate. Our lineage starts with Hanshi Doug Perry, whose martial arts journey started in 1946. He trained under prominent masters like Hanshi Tatsuo Shimabuku and Kyoshi Jiro Shiroma, and was a senior student of Hanshi Sugoro Nakazato, who was a direct student of Chosin Chibana.
Shugoro Nakazato, a pivotal figure in our heritage, began his karate journey in 1935 and was instrumental in Shorin-Ryu karate. He was a disciple of Chosin Chibana, inheriting the leadership of Okinawan Shorin-Ryu Karate-Do after Chibana's passing.
Chibana Choshin, known as the last of the pre-World War karate masters, he was crucial in developing Shorin-Ryu karate. His teachings and practices have significantly shaped the style and principles of Karate as we know it today.
Anko Itosu, often regarded as the father of modern karate, he was a mentor to Chibana. Itosu's influence extends through his systematic teaching methods and his role in introducing karate into Okinawa's schools, laying the foundation for the art's spread and evolution.
These legendary figures form the backbone of our dojo's heritage, guiding our training philosophy and approach. At Aoyama Dojo, we are committed to preserving this rich legacy.
